Deployable Dynamics

Freelance Project

Overview
As the Marketing & Design Intern at Deployable Dynamics, a UOA CIE-founded aerospace startup, I worked directly with the founders to shape the company's digital presence from the ground up. My role spanned website design, brand copywriting, SEO optimisation, and LinkedIn marketing. During the entire process, I made sure to base my design decisions on research rather than purely intuition.

Discovery & Scoping
I began with a structured discovery process: a written questionnaire to the founders, followed by a conversational meeting to talk through their answers. This helped me understand where the startup actually was (they already had clients and had taken products to market), which meant the website needed to build on existing credibility. From there, I discussed with the founders the priority of my workload (website design, then LinkedIn setup and maintenance) and set weekly goals to keep the project on track.

Market Research & Competitive Analysis
Before making any design decisions, I audited four comparable aerospace startup websites to understand conventions in the space. I noticed consistently thin fonts with generous kerning, minimal copy, clean product photography, and the product selection presented plainly near the top of the homepage rather than wrapped in excessive marketing language. This told me that in the aerospace sector, substance and restraint is required to signal credibility to engineers and technical buyers.

Copywriting
I wrote copy across the site, including the About page tagline: "Deployable structures that reduce launch volume without reducing performance", which concisely states our competitive edge and the gap in the market that we fill. I reviewed all copy with the founders to make sure it stayed technically accurate and aligned with how they wanted to position the company.

Marketing Execution
Alongside the website, I set up and ran the company's LinkedIn page, which reached over 100 followers, with the first post drawing more than 50 reactions, indicating that the brand voice and visual direction were resonating with our audience.

Reflection
This project pushed me to treat design as a research-backed discipline rather than a purely visual one. I audited competitors, discerned the conventions worth following, and tied every major decision (design or otherwise) back to a business goal, rather than to taste alone.
